PLAY MARIN COMMUNITY RIDE

Earlier this year, I participated in a community bike ride in Marin City, where Play Marin has developed a youth cycling program, but there was a shortage of helmets. On that ride, we were able to gift helmets to riders in need, and have some for their community bike exchange program. The ride was a huge success and for some of the kids, their longest ride ever!

I am happy to give an update on what has been happening in Marin City. After February’s community ride and helmet give-away, cycling is rising in popularity! I’ve also had many people asking how they can get involved and support the work that Play Marin is doing for that community.

Play Marin is planning to add cycling to their youth Summer camp and needs a few bikes for the program. To help make this happen, I’ve partnered with fellow SRAM ambassador Dana Williams and a few other local bike orgs to create a fundraiser with Play Marin as the recipient.

The concept is simple: make a donation, go out and ride your bike, and see where you rank. The course includes some of the most popular segments in Marin County and people who register get entered into a raffle for prizes. Giro even donated 6 Helios helmets to support the cause!

The goal is to raise $4,000, and for every $500 raised, a kid’s bike will be donated to Play Marin (up to 8 bikes total). I can’t wait to see the smile on the kid’s faces when they get to ride their brand-new bikes. I encourage everyone to spread the word & please donate if you can.

For me, this is the amazing thing about being part of Flashpoint MVMNT. Going out into my community, seeing a need, and being able to partner and create programs that solve a problem.

I really like grassroots activism because small actions can lead to big results.

I am happy to report that this month, Play Marin has launched weekly rides for the youth! My vision is becoming reality, and I plan on joining them as often as I can. The outdoors is a wonderful place and through the bike, I’ve met so many people and been to so many places. It brings me joy to share that experience with people who look like me.
